Chamber orchestraThe smallest orchestra is the “chamber orchestra.” It is made up of up to 50 members in total. The next size up is the “sinfonietta,” which has up to around 75 members. A full “symphony” or “philharmonic” orchestra has from 80 to 100 musicians.
The typical orchestra is divided into four groups of instruments: strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. The typical Western marching band, school band, or wind ensemble (woodwinds and brass together are winds) leaves out the strings, but otherwise uses most of the same instruments as the orchestra.

String Family The string family includes any instrument that creates sound by their vibrating strings. In the orchestra, the most common string instruments are the violin, viola, cello, and bass. Non-orchestral string instruments may include the guitar, banjo, dulcimer, mandolin, and more.
