An orchestra is a large group of musicians which can include even 100 or more members. A band is a small group of musicians which generally includes a lesser number of members than orchestras. Orchestras use four main families of instruments – strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.
The Percussion Family. The percussion family is the largest in the orchestra. Percussion instruments include any instrument that makes a sound when it is hit, shaken, or scraped.
String instruments include harp, violin, viola, cello, and double bass. Percussion instruments include timpani, snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, triangle, celesta and piano.

Orchestras are set up in so that everyone, especially section leaders, can see the conductor. The balance of volume for the audience is actually the principal reason for the seating. Percussion and Brass are louder so theyget put to the back. Context plays a huge role for the set up.
