Today, 15 of the Vienna Philharmonic's 145 permanent members are women, with four more going through the statutory transition period to becoming full members. Vienna may be an egregious example of gender inequality in the classical music world. Yet it is not the only one.
Playing in an orchestra is very demanding physically and mentally. Are you currently in good health and capable of holding your instrument for three hours or more at a time, seven or eight times a week, 30 to 44 weeks a year (this is the life of an orchestral string player)?
Orchestra members have to work together to make music. Children learn to wait to play their instrument at the proper time, learn to adjust to fit their movements and sounds with those of others. They are learning how to cooperate and collaborate, they are learning sympathy and empathy.

Woodwind sectionOboes have been used in orchestras for about 400 years and are among the most established instruments of the orchestra. The oboe is slightly lower in pitch than the flute and so occupies the alto register in the woodwind section.

Violins are well-suited to playing melody, making them one of the most important instruments in the orchestra. Firstly, they are the highest string instrument, so their bright tone rises above the rest of the string section. Secondly, they are played with a bow, unlike woodwind or brass instrument which rely on air.
