In different ensembles you will find different types of clarinets; like one or two B flat clarinets in a chamber orchestra, or a wind quintet. A small harmony band or school band will have around 12 clarinet players while big wind bands or harmony orchestras need up to 30 clarinets of all different types.
The most common question asked by parents and students alike is the difference between “Band” and “Orchestra.” Both are “performance-based large group music classes,” but there are differences. Band classes are made up of “Wind” and “Percussion” instruments whereas Orchestra classes are made up of “String” instruments.
Wind instruments include flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoons. String instruments include harp, violin, viola, cello, and double bass. Percussion instruments include timpani, snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, triangle, celesta and piano. Brass instruments are made up of French horn, trumpet, trombone and tuba.
The Johann Strauss Orchestra was founded in 1987. Following six months of rehearsals, we gave our first concert on January 1, 1988. The orchestra began with only twelve members, but now there are 50, sometimes even 60 on very large stages.
For professional orchestras they are full time year round jobs that CAN (but don't always) pay well. Often players also teach, or do other things like instrument repair. Some orchestras do not pay enough so players have other jobs to get by.

Price of everything is due to supply and demand. Only instruments that cost millions of dollars are unique or extremely rare instruments that are in high demand.
