There is at least one large gong in each gamelan, but two are common and older gamelans may have three or more.
Behind the orchestra was a large rectangular building called the skene (meaning "tent" or "hut"). It was used as a "backstage" area where actors could change their costumes and masks, but also served to represent the location of the plays, which were usually set in front of a palace or house.

People have been putting instruments together in various combinations for as long as there have been instruments, thousands and thousands of years. But it wasn't until about the last 400 years that musicians started forming into combinations that turned into the modern orchestra.
Another musical form that we're going to hear today is the Fugue. In a fugue, a melody is played by many voices, entering one after another, kind of like a complicated round. Like a beautifully-woven piece of cloth, the voices intertwine using fragments of the main melody.
