The saxophone is a wind instrument with a reed and the body is made of brass, and so it forms a bridge between the woodwind and brass sections of the orchestra.

What makes them sound so good is the fact that they did play a more developed form of rock music if you will. They included also entire orchestras in their recordings to create a more vibrant sound. On top of that their singing was neither harsh or otherwise unpleasant.
